SPRING/SUMMER TRENDS 2014
As New York fashion week kicks off the Fashion Week season around the world, South Africa is also seeing the launching of our Spring/summer ranges from our very talented pool of designers. I attended the launch of the SA FASHION WEEK Popup event last night at Brooklyn Mall in Pretoria, to witness young and seasoned designers installations of the new seasons collection. I was really impressed with the young designers SELFI by Celest http://www.selfi.co.za, ILAN, http://www.ilanclothing.com and JANE SEWS http://www.janesews.co.za, they ooze creativity and most of all, their clothing is practical. I also had a chance to play dress up with the young designers,(see pics below). The pop up shop and installation runs until Sunday 31st, so if you are in the area please do catch it.
So now back to the spring/summer trends you cannot go without this season. I love trends that are practical and fluid. I have hectic days of running around all day so these must have items can be modified into what ever lifestyle needs you might have.
1. CROP IT UP & RAISE IT UP
Last summer crop-tops where piloted and this year they have been officially been endorsed. What I love about this seasons take on the crop top, compared to the early 90’s, is that the waist line has come up too, and its literally just revealing you mid-rift ever so slightly. There’s a curtain sophistication with this look and fact that it will keep you going back to the gym to in order to keep those abs nice and firm as they will be on display this summer.
2. PEEK-A-BOO MESH
Exactly described as peek-a-boo, covering the essentials, but revealing a bit of skin through sheer or mesh fabric, gives a feeling of subtle sexiness. I love this look in white or black sheers.
So Birkenstock sandal is back, to think that it was in the same category as crocks 15 years ago, its pretty refreshing to see that its not only back on our shelves but its trendy to wear Birks with socks, and they come in the most beautiful colours. My favourite are the metallic and patent leather finishes. If you put comfort first, these are must haves this season.
4. CLUTCH FOR THE DAY
So clutch bags are synonymous with evening wear and after hours. Well this seasons clutches are for anytime of the day. They are easy, frumpy and big enough to fit your tablet and some more. In leather or in sequence, don’t be shy to take your clutch bag to the market or that upcoming beer festival.
5. BLOOMING DAYS
Floral prints are everywhere and on everything. My mother is happy to see bouquets on clothing again, she says its feminine and very pretty, I have to agree with her on that one. I’m utterly smitten with this seasons floral’s on everything
6. GRAPHIC PATTERNS
Just like floral prints, graphic prints are also trending for the coming season, a lot of designers are collaborating with graphic designers or fine artist and rendering their artworks onto fabric, making gorgeous graphic outfits. ILAN at SA FASHION WEEK has a range of his own artistic illustration interpreted on fabric for his spring/summer range as well as SELFI.
Sequence has moved down south. We’ve seen sequence tops and jackets, but we are seeing these shiny texture on our bottom, skirts and pants are shinier than ever. It packs a serious statement, and please do not restrict it to the night time escapades, shining bright during the day is a must.
I hope this helps you put together that every so important summer wardrobe. Remember be creative and have fun with your clothes.
Happy Spring, even though this cold front is saying the opposite.
