What a success! – DIARO 2nd Frock Exchange!!

So Saturday the 5th of May finally descended on us, and our 2nd DIARO Frock Exchange had 30 attendees who came bearing bags full of clothes to swap and donate to charity.  The ladies were decerning and voguish. After the meet and greet, and first round of drinks, we gathered everyone to explain the rules of the game. We got through the eyeing round with relative ease, and on to the picking, if a garment was claimed by one person it was theirs, but, if there was more than one claim on one item, the ladies would have to battle it out at a sudden death/voting round, they would have put the garment on, and the crowed voted for the person that looked best in that particular item of clothing, a pair of jeans for example was worn differently by the contenders and the one who wore it best, got the vote. The ladies were cheering and screaming for the best looks, it was so awesome to see the utter enthrallment  and gusto on the girls faces.

Between the fashion swapping, DIARO’s winter 2012 collection showcase, the wine, the banter, what made our afternoon even more riveting was DIARO’s partnership with fabulous Hats by Ledikana,  gorgeous Zanu Classique shoes and tantalizing Sex toys By Catherine, i must say the ladies where captivated by Catherine’s demos. The afternoon was filled with great fun, entertainment, laughter, prizes and an absolutely alternative ‘DIARO’ way to spend a Saturday afternoon. The ladies went home not only with new outfits, they left with a memorable experience and a unique opportunity to have fun and be charitable, with many sighting that they will NOT miss the next one.

The aura of our venue also added a gleeful vibe to our event, with beautiful art on the gallery walls, which made for a brilliant backdrop for our pictures, and did i mention Velo Art Gallery/Cafe has the best lattes on this side of town.

Many thanks to all who attended, looking forward to the next one, bigger and ambitiously targeting 100 ladies!!! for an even lofty affair. Keep up with the blog for updates on the next DIARO Frock Exchange! Judging by this ones success, you could only imagine what we’ll have in store for you at our next installment.

Off to the MARKET!…

When I was growing up, going to the market was something my parents did, and it involved going to a very busy part of town, where there was everything from fresh produce, fruits, veggies, meat and meat products on sale. These were the places for good finds, great bargains and bulk buying, of essential household commodities. Then there were Flee Markets which, in my opinion have also, in the past few years lost their flair and excitement. Some are on weekends only, and the really boring ones are open everyday, and every stall sells the same thing, in this case should we still classify them as Flee Markets or retail spaces? …or and lets not forget the invasion of the China’s merchandise.

In the past 5 years, there has been a great metamorphoses regarding weekend markets, an effort to re-vive and re-invent the public market. My idea of going to the ‘Market’ today, paints a very different picture compared to the places illustrated above. This Market revolution has taken dingy downtown spots and resurrected them to their former glory if not better, than what they where in their hay-days. These particular Markets, are places where you go for their awesome culinary and gourmet foods, organic fresh produce, designer beer, tequilla, wines, great fashion stalls by our emerging young designers, and if its second-hand, we’d prefer the term vintage. The products sold here are authentic, honest and sustainable. Purity and novelty come to mind, when you enter this environment. The crowed is discerning, young to middle-aged, they are stylish and artsy, modern hippies and non-conformists. The originality of these markets is what gets you hooked, from gourmet thin crusted pizza, to lager brewed in Germany, not exactly priced as the old boeri-roll  and cola you’d expect from the markets of yester-year. You’d want to be part of this new age vibe, and the banter and socializing alone can keep you coming back for more.

I could literally go on for days about these new city hang outs. Here are some pictures of my favourite markets, Neighbour Goods Market, Cape Town and JHB. Market on Main – Main Street Live Mabone District, JHB. Victoria Sunday Market, Greenpoint CT. A refreshing way to spent your brunch and lunch hours, on a Saturday or Sunday, delectable food, drink and great finds.

DIARO FROCK EXCHANGE WEEKEND

Hi everyone,

DIARO FROCK EXCHANGE WEEKEND, was a great success. Ladies enjoyed an afternoon of great fun and awesome finds. We started off with a meet and greet, then proceeded to exchanging garments. Everyone left with something new, and left over clothing was donated to a Hospice Charity shop. Here’s a look at some of the fun:-

Ingrid showing off her new find

Exchanging clothes is a great way to re-use and recycle clothing. Where going green and still keeping it fun!.

Ree found something, wait til you see it on.

another great match.

We all have clothes that have been sitting in our wardrobes for months if not years, it really feels great seeing someone else enjoy your dress as much as you did, when you first got it.

Ree's dress looked stunning on Mampake.

Our first ever Frock Exchange was awesome, Please join us for the next one, 05/05/2012, updates with details will follow soon.

Many thanks to all the ladies that came. Trust you’re enjoying your new outfits.

DIARO FROCK EXCHANGE!

Hi everyone, Diaro will be hosting a Frock Exchange on the 4th of February 2012. What is a ‘Frock Exchange’ you may ask?, its a party where ladies meet and swap clothes. Bring a items of clothing that are in good condition and still wearable and swap them for something new. There will be proffesional stylist, to answer all your style and fashion questions, and just an afternoon out with the girls, over a glass of wine and deliciuos canepes.

Clothe swapping has been a huge phenominon in the fashion worlds for the last couple of years, its an idea that came about with the green movement of trying to find new and sustainable ways to re-use and recycle clothing. We all have items of clothing in our closets that we haven’t worn in months or years, but wouldn’t mind exchanging for something else. So these kind of parties allow us to aquire new things without having to cough out money for that dress/ shirt/ skirt etc. Its also a great time to socialise, network and meet new people.

This will be one of many Frock Exchanges for 2012, and hoping that it will grow with each one, our goal as Diaro is to have an Exchange event for a 100 women in the Spring of this year. So if you can’t make this one, keep up with the blog for updates on our next one.

Looking forward to seeing you at the DIARO Frock Exchange. email info@diaro.co.za, subject Frock exchange for more details.
